Hey, welcome to our ENGH377 Asynchronous exploration of Twine! Who will you be playing as today?
[[A bunny rabbit]], [[a robot]], [[a mysterious cloaked figure.]][[Hippety Hoppity->Mission]]
(set: $Player to "Rabbit")[[Beep, boop, beep->Mission]]
(set: $Player to "Robot")[[How mysterious!->Mission]]
(set: $Player to "Mysterious One")Your Mission, $Player, is to build your own Twine story, remixing the tale of Humpty Dumpty. You've already had some practice in groups, but now I want you to tackle this challenge on your own, so you get comfortable with how to use TWINE! (click-append: "TWINE!")[
THIS PLATFORM! (that you'll be using for Project 2, most likely).] (click-append: "most likely).")[
So open your own Twine story in a new window, and get ready to [[build along]] with my cues.] Okay - here we go! Here's the original text of Humpty Dumpty that you can start from. Copy paste it into a word doc or the starting passage of your Twine.
(live:3s)[Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.]
(live:5s)[Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.]
(live:7s)[All the king's horses and all the king's men,]
(live:9s)[Couldn't put Humpty together again. ]
(live:10s)[[[Got it, $Player? Here we go -> Assignment]]]The idea with this remix is to think about how you want to make Humpy Dumpty your own using a few techniques. (click-append:"techniques")[ (text-colour:yellow)[(Pro tip: In the Week 9 & 10 folders on Blackboard, you'll see a Twine Resources folder. I have a doc in there called //Prof Rigdon's Twine Harlowe Guide.// That's pretty great and you should check it out.])] At the end, you'll Publish your piece, upload it to your Neocities page, and then share it on Discussion Boards.
Click on each item to find out what you need to do. Your final work should have as many of these as you can add.
[[Basic Links]]
[[Styles]]
[[Looping]]
You can do a lot with just these few elements. Work through these passages to get your next instructions.
(if: $Styles is 3)[[[Here's the BONUS STUFF->Bonus]]]
As you're editing a passage, click (text-colour:black)+(bg:(gradient: 0, 0,#ffffff,0.0444,#e619e5,1,#ffffff))[rainbow] button to set (text-colour:navy)[colors] or the **B**//I//~~S~~ button on the left to make styalized choices. The easiest way to do this is to highlight the text you want to change (text-colour:magenta)[pink] or (text-colour:yellow)[yellow, etc] or add a (bg:cyan)[background], and //then// click the options. Twine will automatically write the code for you.
Implement some color options on at least one passage of your Humpty piece.
[[Time for more! -> Assignment]]
(set:$Styles to it +1)All you need to do to make a link is to start and end with double brackets.
<img src="https://elit377.neocities.org/Practice/Screen%20Shot%202023-03-07%20at%204.11.44%20PM.png">
Just be careful - link names are case sensitive. So if you capitalize the link name, make sure to always capitalize it.
(live:2s)[Try to use thoughtfully crafted link names like we talked about with Twine & //Breathing into the Galaxies Edges.//]
(live:5s) [[[Want to get sneaky? Change your link name!->Hide]]]
(set: $Styles to it +1)Showing a different name from the link title helps you disguise links, let them fit into the narrative more naturally, or help keep yourself organized.
In your piece, change the name of at least two links! It will look like this.
<img src="https://elit377.neocities.org/Practice/Screen%20Shot%202023-03-07%20at%204.39.50%20PM.png">
"Drink Macchiato" is the name that will display, but "meet cute" is the real [[destination.-> Link Types]] In //Howling Dogs// we talked a LOT about the power of looping - returning to that first room and going through the motions in order to proceed. You've been looping back to the [[ Assignment]] page as well. Make a loop in your story that involves at least three passages. It might look like a triangle, or you can make it bigger. It might look something like this:
<img src="https://elit377.neocities.org/Practice/Screen%20Shot%202023-03-07%20at%204.44.45%20PM.png">
(set:$Styles to it+1)If you're feeling adventurous, use Prof Rigdon's Twine Guide to add two more features to your story. I've used several in this piece, including Click-append and the live: macro!
What are you waiting for? (mouseover-replace:"What are you waiting for?")[This is going to rock.]
Now it's time to [[SUBMIT.]]On BlackBoard, read the doc in the Twine Resources folder called "Downloading / Sharing Your Twine Story." and follow the directions.
Create a thread in the Discussion Board in Week 10 for this Asynchronous class, and post your Twine story. The URL should look something like... yourneocitiesname.org/Twinestoryname
If it looks like C://username etc. no one will be able to read it.
(live:5s)[After you've posted, read the rest of my asynchronous directions on Blackboard.]
(live:7s)[Got it, $Player? You can do it!]
(live:8s)[LET'S REMIX!]
(live:9s)[<img src="https://elit377.neocities.org/Practice/Screen%20Shot%202023-03-07%20at%204.52.58%20PM.png">]
But wait, $Player, there's more! You (text-style:"smear","expand")[MUST HAVE] the three following types of links:
Navigational Linking(mouseover-append:"Navigational Linking")[- a link that moves a character / the reader through a described space. i.e. going outside.]
Procedural Linking(mouseover-append:"Procedural Linking")[- a link that involves the character //doing// something. i.e. drinking that yummy macchiato.]
Conversational Linking(mouseover-append:"Conversational Linking")[-the links are options for responsive speech. i.e. think of all the different types of links in Howling Dogs.]
You may have already [[started this-> Assignment]] in your group work on Wednesday.
